Top 5 Reasons Your Vehicle Needs a GVM Upgrade
No matter whether you have a truck for work or to haul gear for your weekend hobbies, the weight can quickly stack up. GVM upgrades are made to reinforce and support your truck, while also massively boosting your hauling power. From loading up the tub with tools, to attaching a trailer or caravan on the back, there’s a lot to gain from this comprehensive upgrade.
Rather than just getting a suspension upgrade alone, getting a properly engineered GVM upgrade serves to increase your ground clearance but also retain the stability and control you expect, even when you’re fully loaded. If you’re not sure if you’re ready to make the jump into something with more power and a heavy-duty payload, we’ve put together our top five reasons it’s something to consider.
1. You’re Already Carrying More Weight Than You Realise
If you’re loading on things like a long range fuel tank, have a lot of gear to carry, or are planning a major cross-country trip, the manufacturer payload can fill up quickly. That doesn’t account for carrying passengers, bull bars, winches, and anything you load onto the roof rack.
Plenty of drivers will be pushing the limits of what’s safe to carry, which compromises on handling and in the long-term, can wear out your wheels and tyres. Factory suspension is perfectly fine for regular everyday use, but if you’ve invested in something rugged like a Ford F150, Toyota Tundra, or Chevy Silverado, you’re probably not an everyday driver. You got a heavy-duty beast because you wanted more.
GVM upgrades come in all shapes and sizes, meaning there’s no one-size-fits-all kit. We’ve got a full scope of options for this exact reason. Upgrading to a properly engineered system with heavy-duty coil overs, control arms, our own range of leaf packs and of course a dedicated suspension kit works wonders and ensures your vehicle can carry that weight as intended. These components are specifically rated for higher loads, meaning less sag, improved support, and better control when fully packed.
2. Your Vehicle Doesn’t Handle Well Under Load
If you’re heading out with all your gear and notice a big difference in how the ride feels in terms of stability and navigating over bumps compared to when you’re not fully loaded, it’s time for an upgrade. Your suspension will be working overtime and this is a particular concern when you’re heading off the beaten track where the terrain is less consistent than a road. Weight transfer is more severe, which can have a knock on effect on everything from the factory suspension to increased wear and tear on your tyres.
When you get a dedicated GVM upgrade, you’ll be gaining more resilient suspension for a start, but will also get secondary parts that support the wheel base and frame of your truck. It’ll also often enable you to get bigger tyres, not only giving you superior traction even when you’re carrying a lot of weight, but it’ll also make it easy to traverse rough ground when you’re off-roading.
3. You Want to Tow Without Compromising Safety
Outside of loading up with every seat filled in the cab or heaping gear in the tub, you might be towing on a regular basis. Whether that’s a caravan or trailer, it’s important to have the power to do it safely. Rather than bearing down on the wheelbase, the tow ball weight is applied directly to your rear axle when you’re towing. This can quickly push you over your GVM, even if your trailer is within its limits purely because of placement.
Having a tow bar is only one part of getting your setup done. You need the right kind of support to avoid rear-end sagging, reduced steering control, and increased braking distances, making it a must-have for safety. The key components that deliver those benefits come from stronger suspension components that redistribute the load, along with shocks that absorb the greater forward motion from the increased weight when you’re braking. This allows you to maintain proper ride height and handling balance, even when towing heavier setups like caravans or trailers.
4. You’re Building a Proper Touring or Work Setup
For serious workers and adventurers looking for something that can not only haul more with a mega payload increase but also want longevity, a GVM upgrade is for you. From doing a loop of Australia with a caravan in tow or heading to a jobsite where you need water storage, tools, spare parts, and recovery gear, the weight racks up quickly. Depending on your needs and the vehicle you drive, you can get a GVM Stage that delivers anywhere up to a 199% increase in payload.
If you’re planning ahead and are looking into getting a new vehicle, now’s the best time to plan for a GVM upgrade. With pre-rego approval, you can get a road-ready, nationwide approved vehicle with Offroad Industries as your Second Stage Manufacturer. This means you’ll have a beast of a vehicle that’s approved in every state and territory before you even get behind the wheel for the first time.
We use top quality aftermarket parts, including our own range to give you torture-tested suspension kits and parts to make it easy to load up and head out, no matter where work or the journey takes you.
5. You Want to Stay Legal and Protected
We’ve touched on legality and approval, but beyond safety, overloading your vehicle is a legal issue as much as a safety issue. Driving an overloaded vehicle can lead to fines, or voided insurance and major complications in the event of an accident.
Even a moderate increase of 50% can be the difference between being compliant and road-worthy and having issues down the track. All of our Stages are engineered and ready to be installed and approved, meaning you’re guaranteed to get the extra payload you need.

What is GVM? GVM Upgrades Explained
Whether you’ve been driving a truck for years, just got a new one for work or play, or are simply about to buy a new vehicle, a GVM upgrade is worth considering. It’s an investment worth making when you want to max out your stability and payload, but not everyone knows how this kind of upgrade works or whether it’s right for you. In the guide, we’ll cover how GVM upgrades are installed, what differences it makes, and why it’s one of the best upgrades you can choose for your truck.
What Is GVM?
GVM is an acronym for Gross Vehicle Mass, which refers to the maximum amount of weight your vehicle is legally allowed to carry. While this number might sound like it’s what you can load into the tub, it actually refers to the vehicle itself. That’s everything from the fuel, accessories, any gear you load on the back, and your passengers. When it comes to the total additional amount of weight you can carry on top of the truck’s weight, that’s referred to as the payload.
Your vehicle’s GVM is also a legal aspect when it comes to on-road safety and compliance. Once you exceed your GVM, whether that’s from too many extra parts or overly heavy gear in the tub, your vehicle is technically overloaded and no longer compliant. From a safety standpoint, it also impacts your control and ability to brake properly, meaning that for drivers wanting to haul heavy loads, a GVM upgrade is a necessity and not just nice to have.
Why GVM Matters for Modern 4WD Builds
Simple things like adding on a few extras like bull bars, electric sidesteps, and a roller shutter can significantly boost the amount of weight you’re carrying. Combining that with extra gear, your payload can get eaten up pretty quickly. When you want a heavy-duty, hard-hitting vehicle that’s suitable for loading up with a caravan for nationwide touring, or simply for carrying all your tools and equipment, a GVM upgrade ticks all the boxes.
Depending on the make and model of truck you drive and the GVM upgrade you opt for, you can increase your payload anywhere up to 199% on the original factory settings. You can add on gear with confidence knowing that you’re not only road-worthy and safe to drive, but are also protecting the integrity of your vehicle and still getting the best drive possible.
What Is a GVM Upgrade?
A GVM upgrade is essentially the process of adding new gear that reinforces and supports the frame and wheel base of your vehicle, in turn giving you a superior payload. Along with adding new components like suspension, leaf packs, coil overs and control arms, your truck will also need to be reassessed by a professional. This is to ensure you’ve got a great installation, but also to update your vehicle’s category where needed from NB1 to NB2. If you’re getting a new vehicle entirely and want to make sure it’s maxed out before you even hit the road, we can help.
When you upgrade before you’ve registered it (pre-rego approval), we become the secondary manufacturer. SSM (Second Stage of Manufacture) makes it easier to upgrade the way you want, while still ensuring it’s fully legal and safe to drive in every state and territory.
Key Benefits of a GVM Upgrade
If you’re still on the fence, here are the key benefits you can expect when you upgrade your hauling capabilities with a dedicated GVM upgrade:
The first is obviously the huge increase in weight your truck can carry, with all of our Stages offering anywhere from a 50%+ increase, anywhere up to 200% more weight capacity than your factory settings.
Better control on and off the road, even when you’ve got the tub loaded up with gear for work or hobbies.
A boosted level of ground clearance for rugged terrain thanks to a new suspension system.
Less sag even when you’re carrying plenty of weight, keeping things feeling smooth and safe no matter where the journey takes you.
What’s Included in a GVM Upgrade?
Each GVM upgrade you find will vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle, but also the Stage you opt for. You can check them out individually, but generally speaking, you’ll find a few key elements in each:
Suspension upgrades, with ours being sourced from top brands like Fox and BDS.
Heavy-duty coil overs as well as our own range of leaf packs.
Performance shock absorbers.
Upgraded control arms.
How the GVM Upgrade Process Works
When you’re ready to experience your vehicle’s real potential, go further, and take all your gear with you without breaking a sweat, here’s how it works:
Choosing your GVM upgrade kit:
You choose the Stage you want for your specific vehicle. If you’re unsure which one is best for you and your driving needs, you can always contact our team for a personal recommendation. The number of Stages we offer for each make varies. You’ll always find options that span entry-level GVM upgrades for more hauling potential for everyday essentials, through to serious and heavy-duty builds that are made for maximum performance and touring.
Installation:
Once you’ve chosen your GVM upgrade kit, you’ll then need to get it installed. Our authorised installers can help make sure everything is done perfectly and our prices are inclusive of the installation cost.
Paperwork and certification:
From there, you’ll need the final paperwork to be completed and signed off. Depending on whether you opted for the Pre-Rego option and SSM Approval, you may have limitations regarding local state and territory law. We can guide you through the best option for you before you get started. The certification is a must-have as it's a legal requirement for when you’re hitting the roads or the tracks in your new revved up truck.

ORI Roller Shutter Trouble Shooting
ORI Roller Shutter: Remote Control Guide
Are you experiencing issues with your ORI roller shutter remote? Use the guide below to troubleshoot connectivity issues, check your battery, and re-pair your remotes to the motor.
1. How to Program / Re-Pair Your Remote
If your remote has lost connection or you are setting up a new one, follow these steps strictly. You must perform this process for each remote separately.
Step 1: Reset the Power
Locate the fuse for the shutter in the engine bay.
Unplug the fuse to cut power to the unit.
Wait for 5 seconds.
Step 2: Enter Pairing Mode
Re-plug the fuse.
Immediately (within 5 seconds of reconnecting power) proceed to the next step.
Step 3: Sync the Remote
Press both the "Open" and "Close" buttons simultaneously.
Note: Do not hold the buttons down for a long time. Press them together quickly once or twice.
Listen for a "DIDI" sound.
This sound confirms the code has matched successfully.
Important: If you have a second remote, you must repeat the entire process (Steps 1–3) for that remote as well. They are synced separately.
2. Basic Remote Troubleshooting
Before attempting to re-pair the remote, check these common issues:
Check the Batteries: If the remote is unresponsive, the batteries may be dead. Replace them with fresh batteries and try again.
Check for Signal Obstructions: Ensure there are no physical objects blocking the signal between the remote and the shutter receiver. Clear any obstacles and test the remote again.
3. Diagnosing Motor vs. Remote Issues
If the shutter is stuck in one position and not moving at all, you need to determine if the issue is the remote or the power source.
Test with the Mobile App: Try operating the shutter using the ORI app on your iPhone or Android device.
If the App works: The motor and power are fine; the issue is likely with your remote control (follow the Re-Pairing steps above).
If the App does NOT work: The issue is likely a power connection, faulty motor, or control unit. Please check your power source or contact a professional technician.

Why Choose Electric Steps Over Conventional Steps?
While there are a multitude of upgrades you might be considering for your truck, one particularly understated but essential option that adds utility to your vehicle is installing electric sidesteps. There are plenty of options for various makes and models and this underrated upgrade can improve the safety and function of everything from your drive to work to when you’re heading off into the bush for the weekend.
What Are Electric Steps?
Electric sidesteps are an optional upgrade to your regular truck’s steps. They feature automatic functionality, dropping down when you open your cab door and sliding back up against the truck base when you close it.
Benefits of Electric Steps
Electric sidesteps offer two main benefits to your beast's functionality and performance. While a small and easy upgrade to make, they can improve your truck's comfort and safety.
If you’ve altered your truck’s suspension, that extra few inches can make stepping in and out of your vehicle more challenging. Adding to that, when the weather is bad, and your standard steps are a little slippery, they can be a safety risk when you’re exiting your cab.
One of the biggest benefits to electric sidesteps is that they create easier access and come with a textured, rigid design, creating more resistance for you to stand on - even when they’re wet.
When you’re heading out into the wilderness, you don’t want your sidesteps catching on anything you’re driving over and slowing you down or posing a safety risk. Another key benefit to updating with electric sidesteps is that, unlike conventional options, they’ll drop down and pop back up only when you need them. They’re designed to drop when you open your car door before locking back into place after you close it, leaving you to head out into whatever terrain you want without any added resistance.
Comparing Electric Steps to Conventional Steps
Depending on the function and form you want for your truck, there are a few comparisons to consider when you’re deciding whether to upgrade. The first is how it alters the appearance of your vehicle.
Conventional, fixed sidesteps stay exactly where they are, with no functionality to move or adjust. They stick out from the side of your cab slightly, changing the front profile of your truck. By contrast, electric sidesteps sit flush against the cab when they’re not in use. They’ll only drop down when you’re entering or exiting, maintaining a more streamlined appearance for your vehicle.
When it comes to weight considerations, you may expect that fixed sidesteps can bear more weight. The reality is that the capacity both electric sidesteps and conventional sidesteps can hold is equal. Our own ORI sidesteps can hold up to 300 kilograms on each side, making them exceptionally strong and resilient.
Cost Considerations
Cost is often a major consideration when upgrading your truck, but the cost breakdown between standard sidesteps and electric side steps is very similar. Fixed sidesteps can cost anywhere from $700 to $1400, while our range of 4X4 electric side steps is marginally more expensive at $1899.
For the extra utility and convenience they offer, we’d opt for the electric models as standard.
Installation and Maintenance
Our brand offers electric sidesteps for all of Australia’s most popular trucks, including Ford, Chevrolet, and Toyota, without the need to damage your truck when you’re installing them.
Ideally, you don’t want to be drilling into your cab as this increases the chances of rust and corrosion. If you’re buying fixed sidesteps, depending on the brand, some may be clip-on, while others require drilling.
Buy Electric Steps For Your 4x4 From Offroad Industries Today!
If you want the best performance, easiest installation, and build quality that can handle everything your roughest rides put down, order your electric sidesteps from ORI today. With Australia-wide shipping, you can upgrade at home or take your vehicle to one of our authorised installers and have it taken care of for you.
Fox Suspension Kits: What You Need to Know
With a world of suspension and lift kits available, it takes something truly special to stand out. Fox Suspension is one of our favourites, and for good reason. Kicking off their journey back in 1974, their origins lie with dirt bike suspension. It wasn’t until later that they evolved to adapt to motor vehicles - including the likes of all your favourite makes like Chevrolet, Ford, Ram and Toyota.
They make model-specific upgrades that take your truck from a regular working vehicle to a beast. Here’s what we rate most highly about Fox Suspension and why you should consider their range for your next big upgrade.
What Makes Fox Suspension A Stand Out
USA made
There’s something unique and special about a company that, after all these years, has kept its manufacturing processes exclusively in-house. Fox Suspension have kept every aspect from design to creation to testing in the US to ensure the highest quality standards are maintained. It’s because of this advanced design that their range remains more exclusive and is created for a specific range of vehicles. While the range is more particular, it’s executed to the highest possible standards.
Racing origins
You might not be hitting the corners of the Australian outback roads at high speeds, but you could if you wanted to when you’re driving with Fox Suspension. The very first suspension and lift kits were designed for the likes of quad bikes and the Indy car, meaning speed, comfort and control while driving have always been at the forefront of their designs.
High-quality materials
Aside from delivering more control and stability when you’re offroading, Fox Suspension use exceptionally high-quality materials in their aftermarket parts. They’re built to last and can take anything you and your next big drive can throw at them. Aluminium alloy is not only lightweight but also dissipates heat more rapidly than other metals. It’s also resistant to corrosion, keeping your suspension in top condition for longer. The internal floating pistons in their suspension kits keep oil and gas separated, giving you the finest control.
Benefits of Fox 4x4 Suspension in Australia
While your truck will come with its own manufacturer suspension when you drive it off the lot, choosing a custom suspension or lift kit can transform your driving experience entirely.
Fox Suspension and lift kits are fully serviceable, making them a solid investment for your truck. Their upgrades are built to be abused by the toughest terrain. If anything ever does need to be replaced, you’re covered. You won’t need to replace the whole suspension setup entirely - just the damaged part.
Their control arms, lift kits and shocks are all made for off-road racing, meaning they can handle more extreme driving than you’re likely to be doing in an average day’s work. The Australian roads can get rough, but Fox 4WD suspension can tackle them with ease, giving you more control and comfort when you’re off the beaten track. You’ll have the control and elevation to clear off-road driving with ease when you’ve added a Fox Suspension lift kit.
If you’ve been looking for a lift kit that gives you serious elevation, Fox Suspension’s range delivers exactly that. With up to a heavy-hitting 3 inches of lift, you’ll be able to clear more ground than ever. You can control and refine how much lift you want so you can get things exactly how you like them.
Fox Suspension kits also enable you to add more upgrades to your truck. With greater elevation comes a greater opportunity to crank up the size of your wheels to give you more traction and off-road capability. To give your truck that finishing touch, add on electric side steps to make your newly lifted vehicle a breeze to get in and out of.
How You Can Upgrade With Fox Suspension
Experience the difference that Fox 4WD suspension can deliver for yourself by ordering from Offroad Industries. Many of the upgrades can be installed at home, or you can book in with one of our authorised installers nationwide. For more information on which parts you’ll need or personal recommendations, you can contact us at any time.
Addictive Desert Designs: What You Need to Know
For a truck that looks as rugged as it is resilient, you’ll want a bumper bar from Addictive Desert Designs. This American brand delivers expertly crafted upgrades for trucks spanning your classic hard-hitters like Chevys and Rams to the trucks that a huge number of Australians know and love, like Fords and Toyotas.
If you’ve never upgraded your bumpers before, it’s time to consider shifting gears and going all out with Addictive Desert Designs. Discover their history, the benefits of their range and which upgrades we think are the best.
The Origins of Addictive Desert Designs
ADD was founded in 2007 in Arizona, United States. Since then, they’ve made every truck accessory and upgrade in their Chandler-based factory. With a focus on quality materials, exceptional fitment and utilising the most up-to-date technology, their core range started off with bumper bars. They’ve since expanded to include chase racks and tyre carriers to deliver a comprehensive range that enables you to upgrade your truck to handle everything the toughest drives can throw at you.
The Benefits of Addictive Desert Designs Accessories
Front and rear bumper bars give your vehicle more protection in the event of any collisions, help shield your vehicle from debris, and provide some additional impact protection. Not all bumper bars are built the same, and Addictive Desert Designs stands out due to its stringent manufacturing process.
The process starts off simply, with a plain sheet of metal. It’s then laser cut with incredible precision and assembled and welded to the right dimensions for the truck it’s designed for. Next, they powder-coat the metal in their signature black, complete with satin black accent panels. Following that, the bumper bar is sandblasted and coated in a primer for a secondary protective layer to ensure that if your bumper ever does get scratched, it’ll still have a slick look, as well as plenty of protection to keep you covered until it can be repaired fully.
The beauty of ADD Offroad bumper bars is that they’re bolt-on. This means you don’t need to worry about drilling precisely or impacting the integrity of your truck. Depending on the bumper bar you choose, they also come with a range of additional features, including winch mounts, D-ring mounts and driving light mounts. They’re also designed to fit around your truck sensors, so you’ll have all the capabilities you’re used to and then some. Each product is fully custom-made, meaning that when you order, you’ll be getting a product designed and built just for you.

Protecting Your Vehicle With Bullbars and Bonnet Protectors
Whether you’re driving on the road off on rugged terrain, protecting you and your vehicle is a top priority. While most people first consider adding bigger upgrades like shock absorption and lifted suspension for a better drive, they’re not the only options you’ve got for better off-road resilience and adding a more aggressive look to your truck.
Bullbars and bonnet protectors are also key accessories you can add to your vehicle for improved safety. They’re typically easy to install and will keep your truck in good condition for longer, as well as giving you extra confidence to head off the beaten track for more adventurous drives.
The Benefits of Bullbars
Aside from giving your truck a more rugged and customised look, bullbars offer a whole lot of benefits. The first of which is increased protection in the event of a collision. They cover the front of your vehicle comprehensively, adding shock absorption.
If you do hit into something when you’re off-roading or are driving at night and something hits your vehicle head-on, your truck will likely come out better off than it would without a bullbar. Bullbars help to diffuse the impact across a wider area, meaning you and any passengers won’t absorb the impact as much in the cab. Not only do they reduce the chances of you or your truck getting damaged, but they can also save you money in the long run on any repairs that need to be completed after an accident.
For trips through rougher terrain, bullbars act as a shield against debris that your truck kicks up. Whether that debris is stray rocks or branches that you’re pushing through, your bullbar will take the brunt of it, giving you more power to push through without risking the integrity of your truck.
The Benefits of Bonnet Protectors
Bonnet protectors are a slick and minimalist change you can make to your truck. They’re easy to install at home, don’t typically require any drilling, and serve to protect you and your vehicle when you’re on-road and when you’re heading off into more rugged environments.
They act to deflect debris, including rocks and bugs, by creating a shield at the front of your bonnet. In turn, this helps protect your paint job and windshield and makes keeping your truck clean a lot easier as well.
Bonnet protectors come in a range of styles and heights and can be added to a range of trucks. The AVS range of bonnet protectors wraps fully over the front of your bonnet, giving you a wider angle of protection. They also offer high-profile shields for trucks that need that extra degree of coverage.
Choosing the Best Option for Your Truck
Combining both bonnet protection and bullbars not only gives your truck a more custom, rugged look but also delivers a broad spectrum of safety. Choosing the best option for your vehicle is as simple as exploring the likes of Addictive Desert Designs and AVS, then filtering by car make.
From there, you can find the model you’re driving to ensure you’re getting a product that can handle everything life throws at it, all while protecting you and your truck. Many of the bull bars are direct bolt-on, meaning they’re simple to attach yourself at home. The range of AVS bonnet shields have a clip-on design, giving you a safer drive without the need to drill any holes for installation.
Protect Your Vehicle with bullbars, bonnet protectors and other accessories from Offroad Industries
