Winching can be used for a variety of purposes, such as pulling a vehicle out of a ditch, lifting a fallen tree, or raising a structure. The basic process of winching begins with the wincher attaching the cable or rope to the object that needs to be moved. The winch is then activated, which causes the cable or rope to wind around the drum or spool. As the cable or rope winds, it tightens and applies force to the object. This force is used to move the object in the direction that the wincher desires. Winching can be a dangerous activity if not done properly. Always make sure that the object being winched is secure before beginning the process. In addition, be aware of your surroundings and be sure to keep clear of any potential hazards. Never attempt to winch an object that is too heavy for the winch or cable/rope to handle. Doing so could result in serious injury or even death. Step-By-Step Process To Winching Now that you know the basics of winching, it's time to get started! Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your winch: Always use a winch line that is rated for the weight of your vehicle. Never overload your winch! When possible, use a tree saver or similar device to protect the tree from being damaged by the winch line. Be sure to keep clear of the winch line when it is under tension. If the line breaks, it can cause serious injury or even death. When Winching always have another person present to help guide and operate the winch if needed. Never attempt to winch alone. Make sure the winch is properly mounted and secured before using, using a proper shackle mount.  Inspect the area around you for any potential hazards such as power lines or trees that could fall on you while winching. If possible, use a tree saver strap or similar device when winching from a tree to minimize damage to the tree. Never stand in front of or behind the winch while it is in operation. Make sure the winch cable is properly spooled on the drum and not tangled before operating. Do not allow the winch cable to come in contact with any sharp edges as this can damage or fray the cable. Summary To Winching A Stuck Vehicle Find an object that will not move under the pull of your vehicle. That can be a large rock or tree, usually a tree. The object should be beyond the area you want to pull it or allow you to pull close enough to the area you need the vehicle to go. Use a tree protector so that your activity does not harm the tree.  Next, find a good spot to mount your winch. The front or rear of your vehicle will work just fine. If you have a bull bar or nudge bar, that's even better. Mount the winch in such a way that the pull direction is as close to perpendicular to the ground as possible. This will give you the most pulling power. Connecting The Winch Hook  Now it's time to connect your winch. If you're using a steel cable, make sure to use a winch hook and not just a loop in the cable. A winch hook is much stronger and will not come undone under the immense force of a winching operation. If you're using synthetic rope, make sure to use a thimble and double over the end of the rope to create a strong connection point. Once you're connected, start winching! Gently apply pressure at first to make sure everything is secure and then give it some gas! The vehicle will start to move and pull whatever it is you're winching towards you. Winching is tough work so take breaks as needed and make sure to keep an eye on your vehicle and the object you're winching so that nothing comes loose. Winching is a great way to get your vehicle unstuck from tough situations. With a little practice, you'll be a winching pro in no time! The Flatlink has a cable eye which is kept in place by a double shear pin made of grade 5 steel with a diameter of 5/8ths of an inch. There’s also an internal snap ring for good measure. The Factor 55 Flatlink is a breeze to install, and this can be done in literally minutes. It’s got EPDM Rubber Guards to protect the alloy fairleads, and these are attached with 4 barbed tips. The whole thing stows smoothly and easily next to roller or Hawse type fairleads. The Flatlink has been made explicitly for use with ¾ inch shackles.  Factor 55 Flatlinks are made in the United States, constructed from 6000 series billet aluminium, and powder-coated in nine different colours. Factor 55 Prolink Features and Benefits The Factor 55 Prolink is a shackle mount for synthetic ropes and winch cables. This shackle mount is machined and engineered in the United States and is composed of lightweight billet 6061 aluminium. The Factor 55 Prolink is designed to offer users a safe way to attach a typical ¾ inch screw pin shackle to pre-existing eyes on synthetic ropes and winch cables. The Factor 55 Prolick uses a removable, oversize ⅝ inch double titanium shear pin. This shear pin captures the synthetic rope or winch cable eye and fastens it into the body of the Prolink. The front portion of the Prolink has a shackle mounting hole built for precision, and it’s mounting tab is massive - 1.2 inches thick!  Like the Flatlink, the Prolink is compatible with both Hawse and Roller fairleads. Either way, the Prolink will tuck neatly and tidily next to whichever fairlead you use it with. Every single Prolink product uses titanium pins and rubber guards - Factor 55 only uses the best materials. The Prolink is capable of handling a load of up to 16000 pounds, or 7250 kilograms. Bushwacker fender flares bolt on pretty easily using holes that are factory-built into your truck. Here’s how the process goes down: Find the factory bolts inside the fender well. Remove them. Make sure you hold onto those bolts in case you need them again. Use an alcohol based solvent to clean the area where you’re installing the Bushwacker fender flares. Hold your Bushwacker fender flares up your vehicle to make sure that they’re going to fit properly. There’s an adhesive backing on the rubber seal of your Bushwacker fender flares. Peel that off and push the sticky side of trim along the flare’s edge. Keep peeling the backing off as you work your way around. Keep that flare held firmly in place on the fender. Apply a decent amount of pressure. You want to get the seal nice and tight. Using the screws or clips that came with the Bushwacker fender flares (or the factory bolts you put aside earlier), fasten the new flare into the pre-existing factory holes.  Tighten all the screws and bolts up once you’re done. Will My Fuel Gauge Be Accurate With A TITAN Fuel Tank? If you’ve got an analog fuel gauge, then yes. It’ll work exactly the same with a TITAN fuel tank as it did with your stock tank. If you’ve got a Driver Information Computer, however, it will not be accurate. Don’t stress though, this is fixable. The long-bed tanks only way a few kilos more than that, somewhere around 22kg. An in-bed tank from TITAN weighs about 23kg. TITAN fuel tanks are incredibly lightweight, and when you take into account the extra weight of the fuel you can now carry, it all just about evens out to the same weight as a metal tank. Are TITAN Fuel Tanks Hard To Install? Short answer? No. They make it as easy as possible to install a TITAN fuel tank. All the necessary parts and instructions are included. Regardless, we would recommend getting your new fuel tank installed by a professional, for safety’s sake. Installation means removing the old tank, moving the sending unit to the new tank, detaching and reattaching fuel lines, and bolting in your TITAN fuel tank. You don't like to think about it, but it may well happen. Your truck might break down, or it could get stuck in some boggy, rocky terrain. If you're in a situation where you need to recover your vehicle, chances are you'll be using a soft shackle. Rated steel used to be the go-to solution for winching and towing, but that's not the case anymore. If you're using a soft shackle, you should be using one from Factor 55. Read on to find out why. The History of Soft Shackles Way back in the day, when trade relied on sailing ships, soft shackles were standard. Sailors were strapping up bits of boats with soft shackles made from rope. Then came the industrial revolution, and manufacturers began making everything from steel. Not only the boats but the ropes too! Nowadays sailing is more accessible to the common man. With that boom has come a rise in the research around high-tech rope materials. High-modulus (or high-molecular-weight) polyethylene is the future of ropes and knots. Shackles made from this material are lightweight, waterproof, and stronger than steel. They float, and they don't damage things like steel does either. Not your head, your hands, your boat, or - most important - your off-road vehicle.  What Is A Factor 55 Soft Shackle? Factor 55 makes soft shackles for four-wheelers from high-modulus polyethylene (HMPE) Plasma Rope. This 12-strand rope is the strongest available on the commercial market.  You can make a soft shackle from two simple parts - a 'strop' and a spliced end. The strop has a knot at one end, which works as a stopper. Usually, this is a diamond knot. When you find your vehicle in a sticky situation, you secure the soft shackle to a rated recovery point. Then you can pull your truck to safety. Why Use A Factor 55 Soft Shackle? Soft shackles are way safer than steel shackles. If something goes wrong with a steel shackle, it's a recipe for disaster. Let's say you've connected your steel shackle to a snatch strap. If that snatch strap is under tension and the pin in that shackle goes bust? You've got a chunk of steel flying through the air, who knows where. It could damage property, injure, or even kill anyone it strikes. Soft shackles don't have this kind of force. Getting hit by one definitely won't feel nice, granted. It'll be a hell of a lot better than getting hit by steel though.  How To Use Factor 55 Soft Shackles If you find yourself in a recovery situation, soft shackles are easy to use.  First, check that your shackle is in good condition.  Pop the eye of the shackle through the rated recovery point on your vehicle. This is important - always use a rated recovery point. Do not loop a soft shackle around your tow ball!  Connect the eye end of your shackle to your snatch strap or recovery rope loop. Pass it through the loop to do so. Take the knot of the soft shackle, and pass that through the soft shackle loop. There you go, you've established a secure connection. Now you can continue with a standard snatch recovery. Remember, take it slow. Build up pressure until the strap goes tense. Keep the towing vehicle in low range at low speed, and get the stuck vehicle accelerating. You're trying to leverage the strap's kinetic energy, not yank the stuck car free. How To Care For Factor 55 Soft Shackles HMPE Plasma Rope can lose strength over time, especially if they're left out in the sun. Keep them clean, dry, and out of direct light. Make sure your soft shackle is dry as a bone before you put it away. Don't let your soft shackles near high heat, and try not to use them if they're wet. Heat can reduce soft shackles' performance, and breaking strength goes down when moist.  Should I Make My Own Soft Shackles? We're gonna say...nah. It's a bit trendy at the moment, especially with sailing types. Chances are you're using soft shackles in 4WD recovery situations, though. They can be pretty strenuous, and even dangerous. You're better off leaving it to the experts. Why make a tough situation tougher? Factor 55 shackles have had the knots tensioned with a winch. They meet design and safety standards.
